Drilling

Eastern Guruma and JSW have a Joint Venture to undertake drilling works with a focus on employing Aboriginal Trainees and developing career paths for them within the drilling industry. The Joint Venture currently has a contract for Reverse Circulation Grade Control and Hydro-geological Borefield Drilling Services for Fortescue Metals Group. Under this contract the RC Grade Control drilling program is estimated to require approximately 21,500 metres drilled per month across the Christmas Creek and Cloudbreak Mines, as well as 8,100 metres drilled per month at Solomon Mine. The Hydro-geological Borefield drilling program includes the provision of Dual Rotary, Mud Rotary or Dual Tube Flooded Reverse rigs and other rigs required to provide water bore contraction services and supply of labour, equipment, supervision and expertise, tools, technical recommendations and technical drilling/engineering support to carry out the drilling program.

Eastern Guruma and JSW have been operating the training program for Aboriginal Trainees since 2013, which has allowed Aboriginal Trainees to gain a Certificate II in Drilling Operations as well as other training relevant to the drilling industry, such as:

  • HR driving licence
  • First aid
  • Four wheel drive licence
  • Forklift licence
  • Working safely at heights
  • White Card, Telehandler, and Back Hoe.

The Joint Venture currently has approximately 32% Aboriginal employees working across the 3 project sites of Solomon, Christmas Creek and Cloudbreak Mines.
