Language Project

Many Traditional Aboriginal Language Groups in Australia, including the Muntulgura Guruma Peoples are experiencing an aging and a gradual decline in the number of Cultural Knowledge Holders and Language Speakers. Without dedicated focus and action, we risk the loss of knowledge about the significance and location of Sacred Sites, associated Stories, Songlines and Language.

To ensure this knowledge and connection to Country and Culture is preserved for our future generations, Eastern Guruma Pty Ltd partnered with Judih Judih Aboriginal Corporation to create the Cultural Mapping: Muntulgura Guruma Language and Significant Site Digitisation and Preservation Project. The mapping work was led on country under senior cultural authority, cross-referencing to a large digital archive left by Wayne's father Peter Stevens.

As an outcome of the mapping process, the project also delivered Language resources and children's books, supporting inter-generational learning. This includes an interactive map of Significant Sites, including the names, the meaning and the associated Stories and Songlines (provided in both English and Muntulgura Language) and a series of children’s books based on Muntulgura Guruma Traditional Stories and associated teaching resources to support educational use within schools.

We hope you enjoy the content and look forward to continuing to build on this for future generations.
